Phonics
Each week the children practise reading different sets of words.
First, the children practise their 'Fred talk' words. (1.4 - 1.7)
First, the children practise their 'Fred talk' words. (1.4 - 1.7)
The children then read using 'Fred in your head'. That is where the children read the sounds in their head, not aloud to help them to build more confidence in reading. (1.2-1.3)
Finally, the children then build up a bank of speedy reading words. This helps children to move on to reading with fluency and is very important that we practise at home too. This is where the children are reading the words, recalling quickly rather that sounding out/using Fred talk. This aids fluency in reading and allows the children to become confident readers.
What do we practise each day?
This is how the teachers practises each day with the children:
Fred talk - sounding out out our words aloud and using Fred in the head.
Fred in the head - saying the sounds in our head and blending to read the word.
Speedy reading - recalling the words by sight.

The children are beginning to read and write sentences. They will do so, using their phonic knowledge. Please practise by printing the green words below and building up the skills in the video above.
Green words:
Green words are words the children need to be able to read using Fred talk. Fred is our frog who cannot read words so he needs our help. We can say the sounds and push them together to read the words. Below are the words we are practicing at the moment. Please practice these words at home. The goal of for the children to become so familiar with the words that they no longer need to sound them out.

This week, we are not learning new sounds but rather making words and writing short sentences using the sounds we know so far. We have been practising reading and writing the words and above are a list of green words you can practise at home. Please encourage your child to Fred Talk the words and then say the word aloud. For example, d-a-d, 'dad'. Then hide the word and ask your child to write it. Make sure they are using the correct letter formation. Please look at the video to help you.
